Kathy Bates Wanted to Thank Robin Williams in Her Emmys Speech

Actress Kathy Bates revealed backstage at the Emmy Awards on Monday night that, when she was presented with the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries, she wanted to dedicate the victory to the late Robin Williams. But when it came down to it, she was “just so nervous.”

She told reporters after the fact, “I almost wanted to say, ‘Look, I won this time and this is for you.'”

In 1998, Williams presented the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, for which Bates was nominated but didn’t win. Afterward, as she revealed to The Hollywood Reporter, he told her, “I really wished I could have had your name in the envelope. Are you okay? I know how hard it is to lose.”
